The Geography Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Mulawarman University, successfully held an Academic Seminar entitled “Trends and Developments in Deep Learning.” The event was a collaborative initiative between the Geography Education Study Program and the Geography Education Student Association (Himapgeo), conducted onsite at the Prof. Dr. Masjaya, M.Sc. Building.

The seminar featured Dr. Hj. Ritawati, M.Pd, an academic and education practitioner from the East Kalimantan Education Quality Assurance Agency (BPMP), as the keynote speaker. She delivered an in-depth discussion on the advancements of deep learning technology and its potential applications in education. The participants included faculty members from various study programs within FKIP Mulawarman University, senior high school geography teachers from several schools in East Kalimantan, students of the Geography Education Study Program, as well as students from other disciplines interested in the topic.

The program opened with a welcoming address from the Head of the Geography Education Laboratory, who highlighted the urgency of adapting to curriculum dynamics and technological progress—particularly artificial intelligence and deep learning—in both teaching and research in geography education.

In the main session, Dr. Hj. Rita Zahra, M.Pd presented a comprehensive overview of the foundations of deep learning, its educational applications, and opportunities for integrating geography with digital technologies to foster innovation in learning. She also provided examples of best practices in implementing deep learning in school settings.

The discussion session that followed reflected the participants’ strong enthusiasm, with numerous questions raised regarding the importance of mastering emerging technologies to enhance the quality of education at both school and university levels. Beyond providing new insights, the seminar also created opportunities for institutional collaboration and strengthened academic networks between universities and schools.

The event concluded with the presentation of a certificate to the keynote speaker by Dr. H. Rahmadi, M.Pd, followed by a group documentation session with all participants. This seminar is expected to serve as the initial step in a series of thematic seminars and workshops designed to develop the competencies of both lecturers and students in responding to the increasingly complex and digital challenges of the current era.
