The Study Program of Geography Education, FKIP Universitas Mulawarman, successfully organized a public lecture on Hydrometeorological Disaster Regulation on Thursday, 30 October 2025. The session featured speakers from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and a member of Commission III of the Samarinda City Regional House of Representatives (DPRD). This academic activity was designed to strengthen students’ understanding of disaster governance, particularly in relation to hydrometeorological hazards, which continue to pose significant challenges in urban and regional contexts.

The primary objective of this public lecture was to provide students with comprehensive insights into regulatory frameworks, institutional coordination, and legal mechanisms that underpin hydrometeorological disaster management in Indonesia. By engaging directly with practitioners and policymakers, students were expected to gain deeper knowledge of current policies, challenges in implementation, and the roles of government institutions at both local and regional levels.

The activity also offered substantial benefits for participants. Students gained practical and up-to-date perspectives on disaster risk reduction, legal responsibilities during emergency response, and community-based mitigation strategies. In addition, the session enhanced academic–practical linkages, enabling students to connect theoretical concepts learned in the classroom with real conditions and regulatory practices in the field.

Moving forward, the Study Program of Geography Education hopes that this public lecture will contribute to the development of disaster-literate graduates who are capable of participating in and contributing to sustainable disaster management efforts. It is also expected that collaborations with BPBD and legislative bodies can be further strengthened to support ongoing academic activities, community outreach, and research initiatives in disaster management.
