The Geography Education Study Program of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Mulawarman, conducted a Public Review of its Outcome-Based Education (OBE) Curriculum on Thursday, 12 June 2025. This activity was organized as part of the program’s continuous effort to refine its curriculum to ensure greater relevance to contemporary educational needs, advancements in geographical science, and the competency demands placed on graduates in an era marked by digital transformation and increasing disaster-related challenges. The public review aimed to gather academic and practical insights from key stakeholders, ensure the alignment of learning outcomes with professional and workplace requirements, strengthen the curriculum’s relevance to strategic issues such as disaster mitigation, climate change, geospatial literacy, and spatial planning, and expand collaborative networks with partnering institutions.

The event was attended by Geography teachers from across Samarinda City, the Head of the Samarinda Geography Teachers’ Forum (MGMP), the Head of the Samarinda City Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the Head of the Class III Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Head of the National Land Agency (ATR/BPN) of Samarinda City, and the Head of ATR/BPN of Kutai Kartanegara Regency. Their presence contributed valuable and diverse perspectives in assessing the feasibility and relevance of the proposed curriculum, particularly concerning school-level geography instruction, disaster awareness, geospatial mapping, and spatial governance. The discussion session generated a wide range of constructive feedback, including suggestions for enhancing disaster literacy, updating geography content to meet current educational needs, integrating technological advancements in spatial mapping, developing internship and MBKM programs, and adjusting graduate profiles to meet the expectations of both educators and geoscience practitioners.

The public review yielded significant benefits, including curriculum validation by experts and practitioners, improvements in curriculum quality aligned with OBE standards, and strengthened collaborative networks with external institutions that may support the enhancement of student competencies. Looking ahead, this activity is expected to produce a more adaptive and competitive curriculum capable of preparing graduates with strong competencies in both geography education and geosciences. Furthermore, sustained collaboration with MGMP, BPBD, BMKG, and ATR/BPN is anticipated to expand the implementation of the OBE curriculum through guest lectures, field practicums, research activities, and MBKM programs. In this way, the Geography Education Study Program of FKIP Universitas Mulawarman is well-positioned to become a leading reference in the development of high-quality, future-oriented geography curricula.
